Rania Emmanouilidou presents her fifth solo exhibition in collaboration with Zina Athanassiadou Gallery. She works as a team with the graphic designer Apostolos Rizos in order to create an installation with paintings, sculptures and drawings all surrounded by graphic environment under the ambiguous title  “DEGENERATION/I shall stay the way I am, because I do not give a damn”.

Drawing her themes from the mass media, the pop culture, books, music, the internet and her personal experience she deconstructs the stereotypical images that are attributed to women by society creating new meanings. Autobiographical but at the same time universal, her works are imaginary parables that reflect the unrealistic expectations that cultures impose on gender and social identity, while borrowing pictures from the internet they question the borderline between private and public. Her painting with intensive colors, holds a flat intention that comes from a procedure of visual collage. It is complemented by dominant graphic elements that are drawn from the everyday visual culture, such as advertisements and cinema but have formed a typographic alphabet carefully designed to fulfill the purposes of this installation project. These works in many ways stand close to the conceptual quests of the vaporwave movement.

The initial idea of the installation derived from archival photographs from the exhibition “Entartete Kunst”. It was an art exhibition that was organized by Adolf Ziegler (and the Nazis) at Munich with 650 works of art that were seized from the german museums and were shown in parallel to the Great German Art Exhibition which declared war to the cultural  degeneration. The works were considered to “insult the german feeling,to destroy the figure and to lack a certain artistic and craft aptitude”.

The combination of the title “DEGENERATION” with Dorothy Parker’s verse “I shall stay the way I am because I do not give a damn” from her poem “Observation” has been chosen with a humorous self undermining mood. At the same time it questions the contemporary art system, the ethics, the ideas and the social behaviors that are conducted in it. Furthermore the title expresses the modern lifestyle motto that functions as an alibi to the absence of any solidarity.

The focus on the feminine that we observe in the paintings but also in the sculptural figures underlines the strategic essentialism, a term that was firstly used by the theoretician Gayatri Spivak where minority groups despite their differences, identify their common characteristics in order to create under this common identity ,solidarity. The repetition of the feminine colors, pinks, soft pastels and purples is a way of participation to the strategic essentialism. By supporting colors and shades that are considered to be inferior, annoying or even faded and flat a sense  of dynamic is brought to front. In spite of  the use of ready made-consumerism society;s wastes-a sense of magic her works where women are enigmatically immobilized waiting for the viewer to interpret, to identify, to conceptualize.

The undermining of the cultural prejudice around the female body and woman in general, universes that are inhabited by powerful hybrid figures are reinforced by the ambiguous titles of the works that overcome the personal narration by revealing questions on the social, the political ,the psychoanalytic aspects of the interpretation.

“Ι have forgiven Jesus” (Morrisey), “The danish girl”, “Marionette player”, “Useless beauty” (Guy de Maupassant), “The flag”, “A long days journey into the night rise”, questions that concern the relationship with the mother-land, the migration ,the gender identity.

Η Ράνια Εμμανουηλίδου, στην έκτη της ατομική έκθεση σε συνεργασία με την Γκαλερί Ζήνα Αθανασιάδου, συμπράττει με τον graphic designer Απόστολο Ρίζο για να δημιουργήσει στον χώρο της γκαλερί μια εγκατάσταση αποτελούμενη από ζωγραφικούς πίνακες ,σχέδια και γλυπτά υπό τον διφορούμενο τίτλο “DEGENERATION/I shall stay the way I am, because I do not give a damn”.

Ο συνδυασμός του τίτλου “DEGENERATION” με τον στίχο “shall stay the way I am because I do not give a damn” από το ποίημα “Observation” της Dorothy Parker, επιλέχθηκε σε μια προσπάθεια χιουμοριστικής αυτοϋπονόμευσης αλλά και ταυτόχρονα αμφισβήτησης της σύγχρονης κοινωνίας αλλά και του καλλιτεχνικού συστήματος, των αξιών, των θέσεων και των συμπεριφορών που παράγονται μέσα σε αυτά.

Οι τίτλοι “Ι have forgiven Jesus” (Morrisey), “Τhe danish girl”, “The marionette player”, “All this useless beauty” (Guy de Maupassant), “The flag”, “A long day’s journey into the night” εγείρουν ζητήματα που αφορούν τη σχέση με τη μητέρα-χώρα, την αντιμετώπιση της γυναίκας από το αντίθετο φύλο,το μεταναστευτικό, την έμφυλη ταυτότητα.

…It’s oh so quiet…

Το Ίδρυμα Μάργαρη προσκαλεί δημιουργούς από όλο τον κόσμο να υποβάλουν ένα πρωτότυπο έργο mail art για την φετινή του έκθεση στην Αμφιλοχία με τίτλο “It’s oh so quiet…”.

The Margaris Foundation invites creatives from around the world to submit original mail art work for this year’s exhibition in Amfilochia titled “It’s oh so quiet…“.

This year’s exhibition is inspired by a recent development in the small city of Amfilochia where the Foundation is based: the national highway that passed through the central, coastal road of Amfilochia has been transferred peripherally. This development presents both a great opportunity and a great challenge to the city, that needs to reassess and redirect its strategies for growth.

Sciphabet

Scientific from afar, but far from scientific

Collecting, photographing and eventually bending scientific instruments into letters is a long process, feasible only when one is obsessively attracted by the aesthetics of science and that’s not difficult, just odd. Science and technology museums being a personal natural habitat, the abundance of raw materials required at the begging of any illustrated alphabet was mostly there as the fascination with surgical tools, machinery and microscopes has been long and consistent. Knowing so little about the function and secrets behind such objects is I think my only regret for being such poor student in these subjects.

Sciphabet is a natural extension of my science or more truthfully, scientifically looking illustration work. Breaking apart perfectly good and honest devices for research and precise documentation, transforms them to raw materials waiting to be mangled, fused and twisted into images that communicate science but couldn’t be any further from accurate knowledge of any sort. Having discovered early on that appearing clinically attractive is convincing, inspiring, or even ironic, made a point of using such secret formula for some of the most conceptually challenging assignments. And this is where Sciphabet comes in to bring high science into the most elementary building block of our written language by fusing the traditional, rusted and obsolete with the modern, experimental and shiny. But also provides a healthy dose of social criticism that doesn’t shy away from pointing out the potential for abuse every time something new and wonderful is discovered, as its dark side lurks just around the corner.

Other than keeping me busy and out of trouble, providing with something to exhibit and an excuse to endlessly photograph strange little details, do we really need such alphabets? Maybe as a continuation of a long tradition for that kind of thing or education, as it seems that the abecedarian format is popular for making anything interesting to youngsters. Illustrating headlines and turning them into the message itself before they are even read? Or illuminating initial caps to decorate a block of copy and provide it with twist?

As The Politics of Science cover for the New York Times Book Review, art directed by Steven Heller, was my first cohesive published experiment with scientific type, it seems that Sciphabet revisits the subject and fulfils an old promise to complete the set.

– Viktor Koen, April 2016

-Temps Zero-

Born in 1967 in Tel Aviv. Lives in Berlin.
Since his first exhibition, in 1999, Michael Ackerman has made his mark by bringing a new, radical and unique approach. His work on Varanasi, entitled “End Time City“, breaks away from all sorts of exoticism or any anecdotal attempt at description, to question time and death with a freedom granted by a distance from the panoramic -whose usage he renewed- to squares or rectangles.
In black and white, with permanent risk that led him to explore impossible lighting, he allowed the grainy images to create enigmatic and pregnant visions. Michael Ackerman seeks -and finds- in the world he traverses, reflections of his personal malaise, doubts and anguish. He received the Nadar Award for his book “End Time City” in 1999, and the Infinity Award for Young Photographer by the International Center of Photography in 1998. In 2009, he won the SCAM Roger Pic Award for his series “Departure, Poland“. His last book “Half Life” has been published in 2010 by Robert Delpire.
In 2014, he collaborated with Vincent Courtois, cellist, and Christian Caujolle, behind the project, in a show called “L’intuition” which proposes a dialogue between photography and music creation. This show was presented, in particular, as part of the festival Banlieues Bleues and for the Rencontres d’Arles 2014.

Born and lives in Bayonne (France)
Gabrielle Duplantier studied painting and art history at the university of Bordeaux in France.
Photography was a hobby on the side. After her university studies, she decided to dedicate herself to photography and she went to Paris where she worked as an assistant for several photographers.
In 2002, she felt the need to come back home. Inspired by the rich and enigmatic Basque country, she started a series of photographs where landscapes, animals or humans are revealed as impressionist visions.
She pursues her work on portraits of women, one of her favorite subjects, and on Portugal where she travels regularly. This series are continuous and interrelated. Gabrielle’s photographic world seems voluntarily detached from all temporal or social reality, she is seeking beautiful images that exist outside of any context, on their own. She has already published 3 books, works with press, edition or for musicians. Her work is also regularly exhibited. In 2012, Gabrielle Duplantier appears in “MONO“, edited by Gomma books, monography of the best contemporary black and white photographers along with artists such as Michael Ackerman, Trent Parke, Anders Petersen, or Roger Ballen. In september 2014, her new book “VOLTA” is released with the french éditions Lamaindonne.

TEMPS ZERO // ALISA RESNIK

Alisa was born in 1976 in St. Petersburg, Russia & lives in Berlin.
Time is a jet plane, it moves so fast” and in its impetuous flight people and things rushing before our eyes are bound to hide their inner essence. Within this endless time flow we roam, craving a single moment of sincerity.
Photography is the way to stop a moment and have a chance to look deeper into ineffable reality, to step over this usually painful dichotomy between the subject and the object. It is the way to build the safe shelter of sensation on the quicksands of rationality, to feel at home looking from the window of a passing train.
Leaden-coloured sceneries, dying factories, echoed empty halls, old rooms still keeping a subtle feeling of the past, and faces, people’s faces… Hurried glances, small awkward gestures, hands searching for a support, grief or harshness in the corner of an eye – they’re all like birds ready to flutter out of their nests in search of your sympathy, to break through the glass of loneliness.
These images materialize into projections of your memories and start living their own lives. They tell the stories for you, the stories you might think you’ve seen with your own eyes. They combine colour and shape with your dreams and feelings, becoming part of you, and you’re sentenced to return to them again and again.
So you roam over the world looking for the moments you could stop and turn into the act of perception, looking for a revelation, looking for a mirror… Always looking for a mirror…

Born and lives in Beirut.
Lara Tabet (b. 1983) is a Lebanese pathologist and visual artist. In 2010, as she was finishing her residency in Clinical Pathology at the American University of Beirut Medical Center, Tabet participated in a workshop led by Klavdij Sluban during the Rencontres Internationales de la photographie in Arles.
In 2012, she completed a one-year, full time program at the International Center of Photography in New York and was the recipient of the Lisette Model scholarship. She has been exhibited internationally in New York, Beirut, Arles, Bruxelles, Toulouse, Lecce, London, Singapore…
Her works mainly questions photography in relation to both documentation and performance for the camera and the spectrum of realities that lies in between. Often taking the landscape as a starting point, she oscillates between the memory a place holds, and the significance it takes on once being photographed and transgressed.
She is currently residing in Beirut, where she continues to explore the themes of memory, trauma, the city, and the body.
Lara Tabet is represented by Galerie Janine Rubeiz, Beirut.

“Explosion of Speech”
by Swedish artist duo Bigert & Bergström
conceived in collaboration with Les Yper Yper
curated by Lydia Chatziiakovou (ArtBOX.gr)

One part of Bigert & Bergström’s œuvre has always been devoted to burning signs, drawings and text into white clean walls with gunpowder fuse. Since the early 1990’s, they have created 22 unique wall drawings using this fervent technique, among others at the Swedish Institute in Paris, the Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin and in Brooklyn, New York, on the occasion of the release event of Cabinet Magazine’s Fire Issue. Last June, B&B visited Les Yper Yper in Thessaloniki to ignite some fuse and obscure the gallery with thick white smoke. The result not only left a black muddle of confused lines on the wall, but also sparked a discussion on how to straighten this line of fire and connect it with the world.

This has developed into the idea of making a network of short circuit works, inviting different art spaces around the world to execute their own. Participating spaces are prompted to answer one question: What is the most burning issue for you today? The answer could be one or more words, a phrase or a slogan. It could be the result of the public’s participation or of the involvement of local artists and creative practitioners. Together, these words and sentences will form a collective cut up poem stemming from burning topics and questions raised locally.

The different editions of the project in various locations will be documented and gathered into one collective presentation, once the project is complete. Each participating space will receive a DIY tool kit, including a special typeface –the Branded Alphabet developed by Swedish art director Björn Kusoffsky for being used when writing with a long line of fuse, designed by Les Yper Yper, according to instructions by B&B.

The project is a joint manoeuvre that will spread around the globe.

Margaris Foundation & les yper yper

The artists’ run initiatives from Thessaloniki (GR), Margaris Foundation & les yper yper participate in this year’s Supermarket – Stockholm Independent Art Fair with the project “Happiness?”

Venue: Kulturhuset, Stockholm (find us on the 3rd floor!)
Dates: 15-17 February 2013

Artists: John Bicknell, les yper yper [Rania Emmanouilidou, John Karabelas, denial of service (h.Martis), Apostolos Rizos], Lia Psoma

Curator: Lydia Chatziiakovou

The Project

The project presented by the Margaris Foundation / les yper yper at this year’s Supermarket – Stockholm Independent Art Fair, responds to the fair’s theme “Happiness”, through a question on the nature of Happiness derived from the artistic practice and experience.

The question was inspired by a recent lecture given by well-known Greek writer Dimitris Dimitriadis. Having reached a certain age, the writer looks back at his life and recounts the love stories he experienced. He realizes that he had lived all of them a priori, through the letters he wrote to the objects of his desire. In those letters, the writer had the habit of prescribing in detail the upcoming date with his lover – something like instructions of use for the rendez-vous. The narration was so detailed and precise, so that at the time of writing, the author almost fully and satisfyingly experienced the meeting. As a result, the experience itself became reduced to a mere execution of the instructions he had already laid out beforehand. Years later, the author asks himself whether his experiences have actually been true; whether he actually lived his life.

Hence the question: is the life of every artist the Chronicle of a Death Foretold?
Does the artwork acquire so large a part in the artist’s life (not simply subsequent-interpretative, but mostly preordaining-prophetic), so that without it, the artist’s experiences are questioned?
What is the role of Happiness in this schema?
Is Happiness related to the enjoyment (jouissance) derived from the artwork’s production process? Or does the enjoyment reach its peak at the moment when the idea is born in the artist’s mind, so that production becomes the mere execution of that idea?

Looking at things from the opposite side, when does the artwork offer Happiness to the viewer? Obviously, a pleasant image is hardly enough to convey the feeling of satisfaction – in the same way that in love, pleasure often comes from the fantasy of its fulfillment.

Further Info & Links

Margaris Foundation / les yper yper is about the process of creativity, art production and exhibition making. We want to bring this process closer to the -mainly non-specialized- public through active involvement and to give artists the opportunity to exhibit outside -or perhaps in parallel- to the global art system we are all unavoidably part of. The Foundation is run by a multidisciplinary collective of artists, curators, designers, filmmakers etc. who strongly believe that art is a fun experience for everyone involved and who are willing to do anything, undertake all steps necessary towards the materialization of our ideas and projects – from the most creative to the most menial tasks. Our projects can be exhibitions, residencies, talks, workshops for artists or the public of all ages. We collaborate with artists, curators, collectors, institutions -public, private, alternative and established. We love broadening our horizons and expanding our practice.

Duration: 18.01 – 02.02, 2013
Opening: Friday, January 18 at 20:30

Ideas are to objects as constellations are to stars (a Walter Benjamin quotation) is the title of Anastasis
Stratakis’ installation which he created as an artist in residence at Les Yper Yper, delving into the
strangely paradoxical role of representation as a perceptional means for human consciousness
and understanding. Its approach is structured upon the extreme dimensional analogy between
two different groups of works, inextricably linked with certain historical conventions associated
with painting.
In his 1:1 series Stratakis creates vast graphic space on wall-sized, fragile sheets of paper,
unprotected by frame or glass. The drawings (made by charcoal and graphite), cover the entire
paper area, mimicking the surfaces of the walls that they occupy, turning themselves into thin
layers of subjectivity laid upon a preexisting, concrete reality. The drawing of the wall’s texture as
an interpretive process teeters between figuration and abstraction. Despite their dimensions,
reminiscent of monumental murals, the works become embodied by – almost dissolved in – the
surrounding architecture, so that their apparent muteness conveys the palpable density of empty
space. The transgression of any material phenomena of things is imposed for the sake of
understanding nature, their profound essence. Stratakis creates impressions of the space; a Braille
writing for the sighted – or maybe not?
Somehow isolated from the aforementioned, a work from the Ubi sunt series stands as a
complementary counterpart. Made with graphite on paper and measuring just 4×3 cm, this
drawing depicts with almost photographic precision an imperious, authoritarian figure of the 19th
century in a characteristic pose, pretentiously charged with a sense of power and important social
status. The concept behind this work though is carried on further past its iconographic
boundaries, when we take into account the scale of the work in relation with its heavy theme and
the overall spatial analogy between the drawing, the architectural space and the viewer.
Although in seeming contrast, the above – operatically proportioned – works are in fact
magnifications of prismatic refractions, containing it and being themselves contained in it.
Using a method not unlike Lynceus’, Stratakis cracks the material shell of things. He tracks the
invisible, to the eye, imprint left by their materiality. With the different parts of his installation
‘firm in their substance, unbaffled yet united in a whole’, such a whole that when one part is revealed
the rest follow, he directs our gaze through a transparent sphere – that of Plotinus.
Anastasis Stratakis (b. Thessaloniki, 1985) lives and works in Thessaloniki. After completing his
studies in Graphic Design/Visual Communication in Thessaloniki, he pursued a BA in Painting
from the Fine Arts School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
